Scene where Harris is riding a stationary bike in LA Story

"I have a favorite quote about LA by William Shakespeare. He said 'this other eden, demi-paradise, this precious stone set in the silver sea, this earth, this realm, this Los Angeles.'" Harris K Telemacher

Echo Park is the location of one of the first scenes in Steve Martin's LA story. You see Harris Telemacher (Steve's character) riding a stationary bike next to the lotuses in Echo Park Lake. The "stationary bike riding park" was created for the movie, so you won't find it there if you go now.

Map this on Platial

Ambassador Hotel

This was the playground of the Hollywood elite, before Beverly Hills became a major nesting ground.

Despite all of its celebrated history & past glory days, the Ambassador Hotel will forever be remembered & associated with the assassination of Robert F Kennedy, brother of President John F Kennedy, who had himself been assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

Senator Robert F Kennedy was himself running for the Presidency in 1968. He had just finished delivering his victory speech for the Californian Primary, in the Hotel's Embassy Ballroom , when on leaving through the pantry he was gunned down by a man named Sirhan Sirhan.

The Ambassador Hotel has been used as a filming location for many years since its close and was just recently partially demolished after a heated and controversial debate over the issue of historical preservation. It's going to be a school I believe.

In the movie LA Story, the hotel is used as the location for L'Idiot, the fancy restaurant that Harris K Telemacher struggles to get a reservation at.

When I was a little girl I used to take tennis lessons in the tennis courts of the closed down hotel. My aunt would pick me up from lessons and she'd always shake her head and say "poor bobby, bobby kennedy, what a shame."

An LA landmark! The signature hot dog shaped stand has been used in tons of movies. Unfortunately it was forced to close earlier this year to make way for some new condos!

Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)!

Explore more than 100,000 works of art at LACMA, the largest encyclopedic museum west of Chicago. Through its far-reaching collections, the museum is both a resource to and a reflection of the many cultural communities and heritages in Southern California.

I find the museum kind of cramped and packed in, but they've just started construction of a new building so hopefully that will help. The permanent collection is pretty good and once in a while they have good new exhibitions too.

They also have free outdoor jazz performances in the summertime as well as family activities year round.

In the movie LA Story, Steve Martin's character Harris Telemacher rollerskates through some of the permanent collection.

Map this on Platial
