3am meteorite showers

comforter-style picnic blankets, whiskey in plastic bottles and secret romances that shouldn't have happened but did. we watched one heck of an amazing meteor shower at sunnyside park lying on the grass, stayed up late just to see the stars fall down. a slow sticky august a few years ago. this boy and i still don't speak to eachother any more. still the only person i ever dated that won't talk to me. frankly i dont blame him at all.

Skateboarding downtown, about 14 years old, some guy runs up from behind me (all i see is him whipping open his butterfly knife and all my friends running away) gets me in a headlock, holds the knife to my throat. I thought (i was 14) that he wanted to steal my skateboard (the only thing of value i had). He just wanted to yell and scream at me to stop vandalizing the sidewalks with my presence. He let me go, I ran to the bus (busdriver's mouth still gaping wide open). All I remember about the perp was that he had a Plaid Pantry 32 oz plastic coffee mug tied to his belt with a piece of rope.

Weld longer forks and a big seat post onto a tiny pink kid's bike, shave half your skull, assemble en masse along a riverside 'recreational' bike path and thrash each other with such activities as jousting, bungee-bike tug-o-war and then cheer as a naked reverend rides a bike headlong off a pier into the 40 degree river. This is zoobomb. And a whole clan of likeminded bike and chaos enthusiasts are assembling nationwide! Argh.

urban iditarod

The 5th Annual Portland Urban Iditarod will be run Saturday, March 4th, 2006. Show up at 11am. We mush at 11:30am sharp. You can pre-register by sending e-mail. The event is held on the same date the "real" race each year - the first Saturday of March. In the Alaskan Iditarod, more than sixty dog sled teams race across the frozen tundra from Anchorage to Nome. In our urban version, teams of "dogs" lead by a musher will pull their sleds (shopping carts) through some of Portland's most scenic areas. These teams of barking humans must negotiate through the unrelenting and unforgiving dangers of Portland's urban frontier. As an incentive to run, dogs and mushers alike will have several "rest stops" to replenish lost fluids and discuss tales of mayhem. The course is over four miles, so dogs and mushers alike need to be ready and able to run their tails off. The 5th annual Urban Iditarod will start at the Fire Station on S.E. Madison right next to the Willamette River and follow the same basic course as the 2005 event. The course map will be posted on the website as well as passed out at the race start once the "rest stops" are confirmed.

Part of a movement, cacophonic, fun, innocent, pure. i had emiko on my shoulders right in the middle of the pit, spinning around, she's just hold out her pillow and thwap people's heads, her and tabor could not get enough of it. tabor wanted to be on the ground, walking up to peoples' backs and thwacking them by stealth mode.

It says, "Call PGE, stop the poisoning of your street with toxic utility poles. PGE uses toxic creosote oil to "waterproof" their poles. Creosote is cancer-causing and smells bad too. Creosote contains PCBs which poisons water and people. Call congress and call PGE, demand better accountability from corporate crooks. Call PGE, alternative solutions exist to their toxic poles." I did the smallest amount of research possible to entertain myself, and found this quote: "Exposure to different types of creosote has caused cancer of the skin and of the scrotum. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ..."

While walking back from the Goodwill Superstore on MLK. Blvd, I stumbled across this fish. Apparently someone had taken a whole fish (I don't quite know what kind) and pinned it between the chainlink fence and its poles. It seems it had been there for a while. Very weird.

the threatening clouds dissipated into a dramatic sunset which set the scene for a very relaxing time at the beach. fire roasted corn, lamb sausage, watermelon, beer and home made thai food were on hand. Highlight, the fire got so hot it melted the cooking rack.

Practical Joke on tourists

I went through a big 'rock balancing' phase many years ago, and during that phase I was traveling around Mexico. Finding myself at a far off edge of the ruins in Tulum, I balanced up a few big stones, then realized they looked very 'in place' here, that they almost looked like they had been there for a long time. So, I backed off to a hidden spot and watched several groups of tourists come and stare at the pile, stand in front of it, take photos in front of it etc. Then one poor old guy thought he'd see how stable this thing was, how it had survived over time, his finger slowly reached out and the moment he made even light contact, the precarious balance was upset and the whole pile toppled into a dust cloud faster than anyone could blink. The man and his group looked nervously all around for the approaching federales, but only saw me, squatting 100 yards away covering my laugh with a dusty hand.

OK, this is serious! Walking around along Sumner St last night, around 11 or 12, listening to a podcast. I hear such a loud screaming sound that I take off my headphones and am standing directly in front of the tree pictured here. Some kind of feral brutality was going down. One growling, snorting, snarling, deep, nightmarishly terrifying beast could be heard high up in the tree shaking around a terrified, squealing, shrieking, screaming animal for a duration of no less than 2 minutes. Neighborhood dogs started barking at the noise, but no humans came to investigate. Then what had previously only been auditory exposure, changed. I saw the branches at the very top of this tree bend out, and the treetop began to shake violently. At first I thought the aggressor must be a raccoon, but the size of the disruption was more along the lines of what you'd expect from something almost human in scale. It was huge, it was wild. Then the screaming stopped. Then I heard the monster descending very rapidly within the branches of this very tall tree, and started to consider what would happen if a bloody predator, of any size, came barging over the fence and towards me. The dogs were still barking. I noticed there were a lot of dogs, behind a lot of tall fences. In fact every house on the block was actively protecting itself from the threat of invasion. Could this monster be a known phenomena? Known yet suppressed? After all, not a single person came to see what the noise was, what all the noise was about. Had they learned their lesson the hard way? Should this beast be ignored? Should I not have stopped?
