Farm 255 restaurant

        From the Farm 255 website:

"Farm 255 is a restaurant that seeks to reconnect food to its roots & people to their food. We serve local, seasonal, & sustainable food for supper nightly. In addition to the Farm we manage Full Moon Farms, a 7-acre organic/biodynamic farm in Athens. Unlike the owners of any other restaurant we know of, we are the folks sowing turnip seeds in the morning and cooking turnip greens in the evening. We supplement our harvests with those of other local family farmers and ranchers that avoid harmful chemicals and practice sustainable agriculture. Our menu, based on seasonal shifts in the field, changes as often as the weather. Our meat comes from pasture-raised animals & is hormone & antibiotic free. We purchase whole animals & use all the various cuts of meat throughout our menu.

"We are as committed to good community as we are to our cuisine. We have an open kitchen so that dinner is a dialogue, where the farmer-chefs and diner-neighbors can have a meaningful exchange; we offer live music every night in honor of its legacy in this town; and we designed our restaurant with an eye toward the history of the 1930’s building that houses it. For us here at the Farm, eating is a celebration of food’s origins, the paths it travels on the way to our tables, and the lessons learned through the journey."

I added them here because they are participating in an Outstanding in the Field farm dinner on September 10, 2006, in Athens, Georgia.
Tags: organic, sustainable, supports local farms, seasonal menu, biodynamic, live music, athens restaurant, wine list, beer, cocktails

Map this on Platial
Located at 807 Main Street, near the new Third Street bridge and an integral part of the new Napa Waterfront District, Pilar is a major contribution to the renaissance of historic downtown Napa.

The 49-seat restaurant is an oasis of cool re-straint to highlight the "contemporary Napa Valley" menu created by the husband and wife pair. Celery green walls are complimented by slate blue concrete floors and bar countertop. Galvanized steel details the bar front and a long black leather banquette anchors the opposite side of the restaurant. The antique-pecan finish on the high-backed, handcrafted chairs provides the backdrop for the jewel-tone highlights of the black upholstery.

In addition to the beer and wine available at the bar, dining is also an option at one of the six barstools.

Delfina Restaurant

        Delfina Restaurant 415-552-4055
Delfina is a bustling neighborhood trattoria in San Francisco's Mission District, owned by Anne and Craig Stoll.

The food is Italian in spirit- simple, seasonal cooking which belies its depth of flavor. Modeled after small mom and pop restaurants found throughout Italy, the menu changes daily, driven by the offerings of local producers. The wine list, like the food, focuses exclusively on Italy and California.

The setting and service both are imbued with the vibe of the restaurant's Mission neighborhood. Friendly, tattooed and incredibly knowledgeable, the servers have been recognized as "do(ing) their job better than many tuxedoed traditionalist." Delfina was awarded "Best Service" in San Francisco's 2003 reader's poll. As designed by Douglas Burnham of Envelope Architecture, the rich pallet of wrapping Jarrah hardwoods and zinc tables creates a warm, tactile space.

Delfina is named after Ristorante Da Delfina in Artimino (Tuscany) where Craig worked in the winter of '91.
Tags: italian restaurants, restaurants, supports local farms, sustainable food, outdoor dining, wine list, woodfire oven, san francisco

Map this on Platial
Greens Restaurant was a pioneer in establishing vegetarian cuisine in the United States. In the 60's and 70's, vegetarian restaurants were mostly small out-of-the way cafés. There was no high profile vegetarian restaurant in the United States. Greens changed that by raising the bar, by placing vegetarian cuisine on a level with other fine dining restaurants. We have been reviewed by food and design magazines from the time we opened. Today we are surprised if a good restaurant does NOT have vegetarian options. Greens helped pave the way for this acceptance.
Tags: restaurants, supports local farms, seasonal menu, vegetarian, upscale, wine list, sustainable food, scenic view, zen center, san francisco

Map this on Platial
Kokkari (pronounced Ko-kar-ee) is a small fishing village located on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the King of Chios. For the love of her, Orion foraged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food "fit for the Gods" prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.
Tags: greek restaurants, restaurants, lunch, dinner, catering, supports local farms, sustainable food, bar menu, private dining, family table, san francisco

Map this on Platial

The Slanted Door

        The Slanted Door 415-861-8032
The Slanted Door is a modern Vietnamese restaurant that showcases the abundance of produce as well as ecologically farmed meat, game and poultry found at small farms around the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Phan family opened the original Slanted Door in 1995 with a vision to blend Vietnamese cooking technique with local ingredients. The new restaurant takes this vision even further in its new environment, designed by Olle Lundberg, overlooking the San Francisco Bay.

The food, relaxed atmosphere, riesling-driven wine list, full bar with premium brands and fresh squeezed juices, and hard-to-find Chinese teas all speak to the restaurant's originality and commitment to quality. Our to-go store called "Out the Door" is now open in the main hall of the Ferry Building, around the corner from the restaurant. Out the Door offers prepared dishes as well as easy-to-use cooking kits that give you the opportunity to make our dishes at home.
Tags: restaurants, seasonal menu, supports local farms, lunch, dinner, bar menu, artisanal purveyors, vietnamese food, private dining room, prix fixe, afternoon tea, san francisco

Map this on Platial

Hoffman's

        Hoffman's 831-420-0135

June and Ed Hoffman, longtime Santa Cruz residents, returned to Santa Cruz in 2000 to set up an exciting new bakery café with a full service dining room serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, breads, tortes and pastries, many of which are French inspired. Both June and Ed are UCSC graduates, as is their son Adam, the dining room manager.

Ed started his baking career over 25 years ago in downtown Santa Cruz at the Old Theatre Cafe, where he was an apprentice baker under the tutelage of Lorenz Rothbucher.
Jacob's Farm / Del Cabo

Located on the California coast, forty-fives miles south of San Francisco, JACOBS FARM grows a complete line of culinary herbs (including hard to find exotic herbs), English peas, sugar snap peas, arugula, red beets, edible flowers, fava beans, and olallieberries.

Founded in 1980 as an ORGANIC specialty farm, Jacobs Farm has grown to 200 cultivated acres. In 1985 we founded Del Cabo, a project in Baja California established to assist small growers by teaching organic growing practices, management and organizational skills and connecting them to markets in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Our Del Cabo line includes a year round supply of basil and specialty cherry tomatoes.

Our commitment to organic farming is rooted in our belief that the use of chemical fertilizers and toxic pest control materials are detrimental to our health and the health of our planet. Healthy soil is the cornerstone of organic farming while chemical inputs destroy organisms needed to build a healthy soil. A healthy soil is critical to producing healthy plants and a healthy environment.
Tags: organic, sustainable, farm, california

Map this on Platial
The blending of the culinary arts and the art of jazz seems to be the perfect recipe for enjoying a creative evening. The renowned Kuumbwa Jazz Center is a nonprofit organization that has been presenting world-class jazz since 1975.

Each Monday night we present internationally known jazz artists and serve dinner prepared by our chef Cheryl Simons. Cheryl cooks with the freshest local ingredients, sometimes from her own organic garden. Her meals are always a delicious compliment to the shows.

Thursday nights are the “Cookin’ at the Kuumbwa” series where we feature great music from local and regional musicians along with specially prepared dinners...and they are one of the best deals in town! Cookin’ at the Kuumbwa features: “Guest Chefs” from some of the finest local restaurants; “Closet Chefs” whose talents are established elsewhere, but we have faith you’re going to like what they serve, along with Café Kuumbwa resident chef Cheryl Simons. We also offer select local wines and beers.
Tags: supports local farms, jazz club, santa cruz, downtown santa cruz

Map this on Platial
