I was riding shotgun, normal speed, south on 26th, in the middle of the intersection, we both notice a 1970 buick station wagon hauling ass directly at us, Byron hits the gas to get away, almost does, we get tagged inthe rear passenger side VERY HARD. We do a sorta flying 180, land rolling backwards. Byron somehow is still in control, steering to avoind the parked cars. Our villain ends up smashing into a parked RV. He denied speeding and seemed drunk. He was like 60 years old.

Map this on Platial

Hyundai Accident

In 1990, a woman pulled out of a bank parking lot and smacked right rear quarter of my Hyundai Excel as I was travelling westbound on President Ave. I spun 180 degrees from the impact and ended up in the far lane facing the opposite direction. She claimed not to have seen me coming. The officer called it an illegal start from a stopped position on her part. I never repaired the damage.

Map this on Platial

Hyundai Accident 2

In my first week of work at Xenergy around 1991 or so, there was a horrible ice storm in Burlington. The people who managed the office park failed to salt the roads despite there being a considerable hill southwest of this spot.

As I entered the office park, I immediately began sliding down the hill with zero control At the bottom of the hill I slammed into a light pole.

Only slightly dazed, I tried to get out of the car and found that the road was so slick I couldn't gain footing. I slipped and fell when I exited the car. An onlooker saw me crash, and then fall, and promptly ran away without so much as an "are you OK?"

I was able to start the car, even though the front was severely dented. Somehow, I got the car into a space in a parking lot. But when I carefully exited the car and closed the driver's door, the car immediately began sliding sideways across the parking lod down a gradual slope. It eventually came to a gentle rest against another car, and I had to physically push it back into its space.

Map this on Platial

Hydroplaned on the freeway

I was headed to an interview, but it had been pretty rainy, and the 110 freeway tends to get these puddles here and there, due to poor drainage. The freeway also winds left and right, like a slalom track. (People like it.) So, I'm driving down it, and hit a big wet area, and start skidding. I think I'm gainng control, but hit water again, and spin the car into the railing in the middle, smashing my front bumper and my rear bumper. The car was steaming, but it was still running, so drove off the freeway in once piece. I'm lucky that i didn't flip the car. I'm also lucky that traffic on the 110 tends to clump behind slow cars, so there wasn't anyone behind me. The people behind me saw me spinning out, slowed down, and waited for me to clear out. The car was totalled.

Ever since that accident, I have driven at or near the speed limit on the freeway.

Map this on Platial

Hatchback veers off, hits median

This must have been around 1998 or so. I'm driving north on the 110, and it's pretty late. This hatchback far in front of me is drifting left and right, just a little too much, and is driving pretty slow, so I'm coming up on them. Figure it's a drunk driver, and I start looking for an exit so I can just take surface streets home. Within a few seconds, the car swerves leftward into the median, and bang, hits the median at maybe 40 mph. It was sickening. I flew right past it within a second or so, because i was coming up on the car fast. In my rear view, I saw the engine compartment catch fire, and vanish into the darkness. I tried to find an offramp; it was kind of far, and I got off. I was going to go back, but talked myself out of it. What could I do? I didn't have a cel phone or anything. I still feel bad about doing that.

Map this on Platial

witnessed car morphology

i lived half a block away, this was years and years ago, in the 80s, we hear this thunderously loud screech and crash, run out the front and see the smoke dust still settling at the corner.

this is a mellow residential street before portland got all stop sign happy, so it was unregulated, one car was zooming down the small hill of 24th while another was zipping up wasco to the west, they hit, and one car got pushed up the curb and smacked sideways into the telephone pole. the car was bent nearly into a croissant shape, all the glass gone, and the amazing part, the two curbside wheels had simply folded flat when they hit the curb.

i don't recall, but i think nobody was hurt (no ambulances at least), the idea of the force that reshaped that car has stuck with me ever since.

Map this on Platial
my parents can confirm that as a small child we witnessed a car vs motorcycle accident at this corner, but the image in my head, and the story that i must have told all my childhood buddies is really out of control.

"yeah, we saw this motorcycle get into a head on collision with a topless jeep, and the guy on the motorcycle got tossed into the air, he did a full flip right over the jeep, landed on his feet, walked around for half a minute while a crowd gathered, then dropped dead."

We were all sober, except I think I might have had a drink several hours before. It was like a virgin's cruise or something. Well, not really, but close. It was pretty late, and as we went through the intersection, the car's tail got hit by a frat boy from FSU. We spun out and that was that.

I don't recall if we had the green, but Sammy said we did. But there were no witnesses, so it was declared that both parties were equally liable.

Map this on Platial

Biker guy got hurt

I don't know why, but I got on the freeway into heavy rush hour traffic, only to see in the median, a leather jacket biker guy who got into some kind of collision with a car or two, and was knocked off. He was bleeding all over the asphalt. the traffic plodded forward, as rubberneckers like me stared at the man, and the people who were fretting around him, having their freakouts. the guy wasn't doing so well, and hadn't been wearing his leathers, and his body was cut up. the traffic parted to let a fire truck drive in reverse down the freeway to rescue the man. I drove forward, like everyone else, and as the thick traffic loosened up, sped away from the scene, trying to forget, telling myself that this dude was going to be okay.

Map this on Platial

rear-ended a car driving my parents' van

After the accident in which I totalled the citation, I was driving my parents' van. It was a huge, rusty old monster of an automobile. It might not have had any heat.

It was a cold, icy day and the roads were a little slick. I was driving to school for something. Play rehearsal, debate practice, a Model UN meeting. Some dorky thing like that. The reason I got into this accident was that I had the incredibly bad habit of reading and driving when was 16-17. Yes. That's right. Reading a book and driving a van on an icy road. Multitasking! If I could read and walk, read and eat, read and watch TV, read and play board games, why not read and drive?

So, I was driving behind a woman in a station wagon, both of us going 15-20 mph. I saw her put on her left turn signal and start to turn. I looked down at my book, and then smashed into the back of her car. I think I didn't even hit the brake until after I hit her. Her car was totalled.

It took me about 15 years to admit to anyone that I had been reading while driving when I got into this accident.

Map this on Platial

The First Accident for Which I Was Responsible

I was driving the old Chevy Citation my parents gave me when I got my license. I should mention that it took me three tries driving to get my license. The first time I drove to try to get my license I ended the test by pulling from the wrong lane of a four-lane street INTO the wrong lane of a two-way street and driving on the wrong side of the road for a block before pulling into the DMV parking lot.

This is to say that I was a terrible, terrible driver. I am still a pretty bad driver. Luckily I lived most of my life in big cities with subways and haven't had much chance to do damage. I hate driving.

So I had my license for a couple months when I stop at the stop sign in front ot N22nd St. This is a pretty busy street and people drive down it pretty fast.

I look to the left. It's clear. I look to the right. Lots of cars. I watch the cars pass and then I pull out, to turn left, and BLAM, I'm broadsided by another car. I had forgotten to look left again and had pulled right out in front of these guys. I busted the windshield with my head, but there was no permenant drain bamage. The front axel of the Citation was pushed back about three inches. Neither of the guys in the other car were hurt. This accident taught me to wear a seatbelt.

The car the other guys were in was a brand new car that they were test driving.

Map this on Platial
