London, our home, is the global hub of the arms trade. CAAT London hopes you will join us in peacefully protesting this trade in death, which is corrupt, indiscriminate and part of the establishment.
Corrupt
The Serious Fraud Office is looking into a number of cases concerning corruption, sometimes involving countries with serious records of human right abuse. Recently Tony Blair ordered the SFO to halt its investigation into BAE Systems military contracts with the Saudi Government. CAAT and The Corner House have launched a legal challenge.
Indiscriminate
The trade deals in death. It has no qualms about who it sells to. Companies with HQs in London sell military equipment to regimes with atrocious human-rights records and UK made Bedford trucks have been used by the genocidal Janjaweed in Darfur. CAAT is a coalition of groups and individuals working for the reduction and ultimate abolition of the international arms trade.
Establishment
Heads of the industry are seconded into the government’s Defence Export Services Organisation, which employs nearly 500 civil servants to sell arms and lobby across government for military exports. As well as politically, the major arms companies are physically part of the establishment, with offices throughout the heart of London. CAAT is calling for the closure of DESO, located in Bloomsbury.
